1. Four separate jobs
- Circulation moves water.
- Filtration removes suspended material.
- Disinfection inactivates microorganisms.
- Cleaning/water replacement removes material that recirculation cannot solve indefinitely.
2. Filtration
A sediment cartridge can remove debris; it does not certify water as microbiologically safe. Keep the filter maintained because fouling also changes chiller flow.
3. Disinfection
CDC pool/hot-tub guidance uses disinfectant residual and pH as core controls. A cold plunge may have different temperature, volume and equipment, so use a treatment product intended for your application and follow its label rather than copying a forum recipe.
4. Testing
If your method depends on a disinfectant residual or pH, test according to the treatment system instructions. Clear water is not proof of safe water.
5. Water replacement
Recirculating systems still accumulate contaminants. Replace water and clean the tub at an interval appropriate to user load, treatment and water quality. Persistent odor, cloudiness or slime is a reason to stop and correct the system—not simply keep adding products.
6. User hygiene
Showering before use reduces the amount of sweat, dirt and other material entering the water. Do not use shared/reused water when ill with diarrhea, and do not swallow the water.
7. Chemical safety
Pool/spa chemicals can injure people when mixed or mishandled. Follow labels and storage requirements and keep incompatible products separated.
8. UV and ozone
UV/ozone can be useful components in engineered treatment systems, but effectiveness depends on dose, water clarity, flow and installation. Treat them as components, not magic replacements for maintenance.
